An athlete from Tabriz, Sajjad Hashimi (Sarkan Yıldırım), competed for Turkey in the 2024 Paralympic Games and won a gold medal.
The Turkish media reported on this.
Sarkan Yıldırım won the 100-meter race, according to reports.
The athlete, who lived in Iran until 2022, claimed that athletes are undervalued in the country and sought refuge in Turkey.
He had previously spoken to the media about the lack of attention paid to sports in the provinces of Azerbaijan in Iran.
"For this reason, many athletes of Turkish origin are forced to move to clubs in other cities of Iran, including Isfahan province," the South Azerbaijani athlete said.
The Iranian media expressed jealousy and concern when Sajjad Hashemi (Sarkan Yıldırım), who adopted Turkish citizenship and a Turkish name, won a gold medal for Turkey.
