Iran May Burn Mazut at Power Plants This Winter if Energy Imports Fall Short

Iran is seeking to avoid using mazut at its power plants this winter. However, the country may be forced to burn the heavy fuel oil if energy consumption does not decline and imports fail to meet domestic demand.

The head of the government’s Energy Optimization Agency made the announcement.

Esmail Saghab-Esfahani said the amount of mazut used would depend on how much households and industrial facilities reduce their energy consumption, as well as the availability of energy imports.

He added that it was still too early to estimate how much mazut might be burned this winter.

Mazut consumption contributes to increased air pollution, posing serious risks to human health.
