Iran is expected to receive an initial shipment of up to 400 man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS) from China in the coming weeks.
The information was reported by Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the matter.
According to the report, the deal, estimated to be worth between US$60 million and US$70 million, is one of Tehran's largest efforts to strengthen its short-range air defence capabilities following the US and Israeli military campaign against Iran. The conflict exposed weaknesses in Iran's ability to protect critical infrastructure and military facilities.
Reuters reported that the agreement includes the purchase of 300 to 400 Chinese-made QW-12 and FN-16 man-portable surface-to-air missile systems.
The report added that the deal was finalised through Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, a Hong Kong-based company that acted as an intermediary between Iranian officials and a Chinese defence manufacturer.
