Israel Says Hamas Internal Security Chief Detained in Gaza City

The head of Hamas’s internal security apparatus has been detained during an operation in Gaza City.

According to statements issued by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and the Shin Bet domestic security service, Shin Bet special forces detained the head of Hamas’s internal security apparatus during an operation in Gaza City on Tuesday morning.

Arabic-language media had reported earlier in the morning that an anti-Hamas armed group backed by Israel had carried out an operation in Gaza City, during which Hamas security chief Muin al-Arabid was reportedly detained. However, Netanyahu later said that the operation had been carried out by the Shin Bet and the Israel Defense Forces. Describing the operation as “bold,” he said the individual who had overseen the establishment of Hamas’s internal security apparatus was detained near his home in Gaza.

According to the Israeli side, the Air Force carried out strikes on several “military targets” in the area during the operation. The strikes were reportedly aimed at eliminating potential threats to Israeli forces participating in the operation. A joint statement said that no Israeli soldiers were injured during the operation.

Netanyahu said the detained individual had recently been involved in efforts by Hamas to reestablish its governance in Gaza. According to Netanyahu, the individual had been involved in “deceptive activities” related to the issue of disarming Gaza and had also assisted in carrying out attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement that the operation was primarily aimed at eliminating existing threats in the area, weakening Hamas’s control over the territory, and preventing the organization from expanding its plans for terrorist activities against Israeli forces and civilians.
