Iraqi security forces have uncovered explosive remnants and suspected drone launch positions near the Iranian border as part of an investigation into the attack that forced Saudi Arabia to suspend operations on its main oil pipeline.

A security official told Al Jazeera that traces of explosives suggesting drones had been launched were found near the Duwayrij River in the Jazirat al-Tayyib area of Maysan province.

AFP separately reported that security forces discovered drone launch equipment in the remote al-Tib area of Maysan, near the Iranian border.

The findings came after Iraqi and Saudi officials said the drones used in the attack on Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline had been launched from Iraqi territory.

Iran-backed Iraqi armed groups have rejected any involvement. They said they would have been “proud” to carry out such an operation if they had done so, but insisted they were not responsible.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
